What to do about warpUpdated 9 months ago

If your cutting board has warped, don’t worry—you can usually fix it with a few simple steps. Here’s how: Always try Number 1 first and be patient, it almost always works and is the most natural.

  1. Flip It:

    • If the board is slightly warped, simply flip it over and use the other side, cupped side up (like a hill not a valley)
    • Over time, this can help even out the warping. This is our preferred method. It's the slowest method but the most natural and almost always works with enough patience.
  2. Soak and Press:

    • Fill a large container with hot water.
    • Submerge the warped board completely and let it soak for a few hours or overnight.
    • Remove the board, dry it off, and place it on a flat surface, cupped side up (like a hill, not a valley).
    • Weigh it down with heavy objects, like books or weights, to help flatten it out.
    • Leave it weighted down until it’s completely dry (this could take a couple of days).
  3. Steam and Press:

    • Boil water in a large pot and use a steam basket or colander to place the board over the steam.
    • Steam the board evenly, focusing on the warped areas.
    • Once the board is pliable, remove it and place it on a flat surface.
    • Weigh it down with heavy objects or use clamps to hold it flat.
    • Leave it weighted down until it’s completely dry.

Pro Tips

  • Keep It Dry: Prevent future warping by not letting water sit on the board. Always dry it thoroughly after washing.
  • Oil Regularly: Use a food-safe oil like Virginia Boys’ Kitchens fractionated coconut oil to keep the wood hydrated and less prone to warping.
  • Store Properly: Store your cutting board upright to allow even air circulation.

By following these steps, you can restore your cutting board to its original flat state and keep it in great condition.
